Why a Dryer Runs but Doesn't Heat
Cloth dryers separate the tumbling motor circuit from the heating circuit โ that's why a dryer can keep running normally while producing zero heat. The drum motor and the heating system fail independently, which is exactly why "runs but doesn't dry" is such a common and specific complaint across all major brands.
The most overlooked root cause is lint and vent blockage: restricted airflow makes the dryer overheat internally, which trips a safety thermal fuse or thermostat to protect the unit โ the heating element itself may be perfectly fine, but the safety cutoff is doing its job.
Common Causes of No Heat
Burnt-Out Heating Element
The coil that generates heat can fail completely with age or after a power surge โ no heat regardless of cycle selected.
Tripped Thermal Fuse
A safety fuse cuts power to the heater when internal temperature exceeds safe limits โ usually triggered by blocked airflow.
Faulty Thermostat
Misreads internal temperature and cuts heating prematurely or never activates it.
Lint Filter or Vent Blockage
Restricted airflow is the single most common root cause โ it directly triggers thermal fuse trips.
Power Supply Issue
Some dryers need a specific voltage/phase for the heating circuit โ a partial power fault runs the motor but not the heater.
Control Board Fault
The board that signals the heater to activate can fail while leaving the motor circuit unaffected.
What a Proper Diagnosis Looks Like
Because several different faults produce the exact same symptom, the real cause has to be isolated methodically:
- Check and clean the lint filter and full vent duct first โ the most common and cheapest fix
- Test the thermal fuse for continuity โ a tripped fuse needs replacement, not a reset
- Test the heating element for continuity with the fuse ruled out
- Check thermostat operation if element and fuse both test fine
- Only then investigate the control board
Dryer Running But Not Heating?
Same-day diagnosis across Mumbai โ we identify the exact cause before quoting any part replacement.
Can You Check This Yourself First?
Two checks worth doing before booking a repair:
- Clean the lint filter โ a full filter is the single most common cause of heating problems
- Check the exhaust vent isn't crushed, kinked, or blocked at the wall outlet
If there's still no heat after clearing both, the thermal fuse, element, or thermostat needs testing โ that's when a proper diagnostic visit is worth booking rather than guessing further.
Is This Covered Under Warranty?
If your dryer is still under company warranty, a manufacturer claim usually covers the heating element or thermal fuse. Once warranty has expired, an independent repair with genuine parts and our own 6-month service warranty is typically faster than the manufacturer's service queue.
