What Does the OE Error Actually Mean?
LG washing machines track how long it takes to drain water out at the end of a wash or rinse cycle. If draining takes longer than expected, the machine displays OE and stops the cycle to prevent overflow or motor strain — this protects the machine, but it also means the cycle won't complete until the blockage is cleared.
The good news: OE is almost always caused by a physical blockage somewhere in the drain path, not a major mechanical failure.
Common Causes of the OE Error
Blocked Drain Filter
Coins, lint, buttons, and small items commonly collect in the drain filter over time.
Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose
The hose behind the machine can get bent, trapped, or clogged with debris.
Drain Hose Positioned Too High
If the hose end is raised too high, water can't drain by gravity properly.
Faulty Drain Pump
The pump motor itself can wear out or get jammed by a foreign object.
Pump Impeller Jammed
Small objects (hairpins, buttons) can physically jam the pump's impeller blades.
Drain Pump Sensor Fault
Less common — the sensor misreads drain completion even when flow is fine.
What a Proper Diagnosis Looks Like
Before replacing any part, the real blockage point needs to be found:
- Check and clean the drain filter first — this alone resolves the majority of OE errors
- Inspect the external drain hose for kinks, height, or blockage
- If both are clear, open the pump housing to check for a jammed impeller
- Only if the pump itself is damaged does it need replacement

Can You Check This Yourself First?
The drain filter on most LG front-load machines is accessible from a small panel at the bottom-front of the machine. Before booking a repair:
- Turn off and unplug the machine before opening any panel
- Locate the filter cap at the bottom front and open it slowly — some residual water will drain out
- Clear any debris — coins, lint, buttons — and reseal the cap firmly
If the error persists after clearing the filter, the blockage is likely further down the drain hose or inside the pump — that's when a proper diagnostic visit is worth it.
