Why the Motor Runs But the Drum Doesn't Turn
Most dryers connect the motor to the drum using a long rubber drive belt looped around a pulley system. If that belt snaps or slips off its track, the motor continues running completely normally — since electrically nothing has changed — but there's no longer a mechanical connection moving the drum.
Common Causes
Broken Drive Belt
The most common cause by far — belts wear out and snap with age and heavy use.
Slipped Belt
The belt can come off its pulley track without breaking, especially after an overloaded cycle.
Worn Drum Rollers or Bearings
Support rollers that the drum rests on can seize up, adding enough resistance to stall rotation.
Motor Failure
Less common if the motor is audibly running, but a weak motor can fail to generate enough torque to turn a loaded drum.
Door Switch Fault
Some models won't engage the drum motor fully if the door switch isn't signalling correctly, even if the door is shut.
What a Proper Diagnosis Looks Like
- Check for a broken or slipped belt first — visible with the back or front panel removed
- Inspect drum support rollers and bearings for seizing or wear
- Test the door switch signal if belt and rollers are intact
- Test motor torque and function directly only after the above are ruled out

Visually checking if you can see or hear the belt (a faint slapping/rattling sound often means a loose belt) is fine, but replacing the belt itself requires opening the dryer's casing and correctly re-routing it around the pulley system — we recommend a technician for the actual repair.
