Why Water Doesn't Drain Out
Whirlpool machines push wash water out through a filter, then a drain pump, then a hose to the outlet. A restriction anywhere along that path — most commonly a coin, button, or lint clog at the filter or pump — stops draining completely, even though the pump motor itself is perfectly healthy.
Common Causes of No Drainage
Blocked Drain Filter
Coins, buttons, hair, and lint collect here over time — the single most common cause of drainage failure.
Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose
A bent hose behind the machine, or a clog further down the line, restricts water flow out.
Drain Pump Impeller Jam
A small object lodged in the pump impeller stops it from pushing water through, even if the motor still runs.
Drain Pump Motor Failure
Less common — the pump motor itself burns out and needs replacement.
Faulty Door Lock Sensor
Some models won't complete the drain-and-spin sequence unless the door lock signal is confirmed correctly.
Control Board Fault
Rare, but the board can fail to send the drain command even when the pump itself is fine.
What a Proper Diagnosis Looks Like
- Check and clear the drain filter first — often resolves the issue immediately
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks or external blockage
- Check the pump impeller for a jammed object once filter and hose are ruled out
- Test the pump motor directly only after the above are cleared
- Check door lock sensor signal if drainage still fails with a clear path

Can You Check This Yourself First?
Most Whirlpool front-load models have a drain filter access panel at the bottom-front — with the machine unplugged and a shallow tray ready to catch residual water, open it and check for trapped objects or lint. This alone resolves a large share of cases.
